Trail guide

Our second winter test of the MCETO hot tent, at the Keibu RMK campsite on the coast west of Tallinn, with the thermometer at −10 °C. We cleared the snow, raised the tent, put the stove and chimney together, split firewood and cooked dinner and breakfast on the stove top.

The lesson

During the night the carbon monoxide alarm went off. To keep the sea wind out we had shovelled deep snow against the outer skirt of the tent. It stopped the draught, and it also sealed the fresh-air intake. We opened the vents, the reading dropped, and nobody was hurt. If you burn wood inside a tent, carry a working CO alarm. Every time.

Practical

  • Where: Keibu RMK campsite (Keibu lõkkekoht), Lääne-Harju. Free, first come first served, firewood provided by RMK in the shelter.
  • Getting there: by car, about 70 km from Tallinn along the north-west coast. Check the RMK map for the exact turn-off.
  • Tent and stove: MCETO hot tent with its wood stove. Chimney through the stove jack, spark arrestor on, stove on a fireproof mat.
  • Food: beef, potatoes and garlic in one pot for dinner; ham and eggs for breakfast.
  • Camera: this one was shot on a phone, before the a6700.
